Generations of exceptional healthcare

Our Story

St. Paul Corner Drug—then Kregel Pharmacy—first opened its doors back in 1922.

Since then, we have grown to become St. Paul’s premier independently owned pharmacy. We provide the highest quality pharmacy care you can find alongside a range of complementary services that holistically address our patients’ health and wellness needs, including medical equipment purchase and rental, high quality nutritional supplement purchasing and counseling, and vaccination. Our team of four Pharmacists, three Pharmacy Technicians, one Nurse, and over ten support staff has a combined 170+ years of pharmacy service experience. We pride ourselves in developing relationships with our patients and customers as we guide them toward a greater knowledge and understanding of their health and wellness needs.

But our story is not just about “we,” us. It’s about YOU—our patient, our customer, our neighbor.

At St. Paul Corner Drug, we accept most insurance plans, so you pay the same price (sometimes even less!) as you would at one of the bigger chain pharmacies. You will leave our corner store with your prescriptions, filled efficiently, in hand, along with the proper knowledge of how to use your medication accurately and safely. You’ll learn how to choose nutritional supplements that compliment your healthcare needs and prescription therapies, and you can have those products, along with your prescriptions, delivered curbside at our store or straight to your door. You’ll even be able to rent or purchase medical equipment from us, as well as special order your favorite over-the-counter items that you can’t find anywhere else.

We’re here to tell you that bigger is just bigger—and definitely not better—when it comes to pharmacy. In fact, it can “cost” you so much more. Give us a try, we promise you'll love the experience.

“We still do
humanity here.”

John Hoeschen, Owner & Pharmacist

Clinical Staff

John V. Hoeschen, RPh, BSPharm

OWNER & PHARMACIST

John is a 1989 graduate of the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy and has been actively practicing community pharmacy at this very location ever since. He served on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Pharmacists Association for 13 years, and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the nonprofit Patients United for Insurance Reform (PUIR). He has received multiple commendations for his service, including the Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award from the Minnesota Pharmacists Association in 1996 and the Bowl of Hygeia Community Service Award—considered to be the highest honor in the pharmacy profession—in 2011. Additionally, John was a finalist for the Ken Wurster Community Leadership Award from Cardinal Health in 2016, an award seeking to recognize pharmacists who demonstrate “outstanding commitment to promoting the principles of community pharmacy.”

A note from John:

I purchased the pharmacy from its previous owner in 1997, renaming it St. Paul Corner Drug. In the years since, I’ve added technology components such as robotic filling in order to reduce the manual burden of filling prescriptions giving staff more time to spend consulting with and educating patients. I’ve also worked hard to continually refresh our shelves with products that incorporate the latest scientific advancements and produce better results when combined with prescription therapies. I am constantly looking for products that are safer to use and less impactful on our environment—somewhat the opposite of the “big box” American tendency, which seem to be constantly chasing the latest product releases for the simple fact that they are new, not necessarily better for you or our planet.

I, and the rest of our team at St. Paul Corner Drug, strive to provide the very best pharmacy services available in the Twin Cities. Going the extra mile to make certain all patients’ needs are met to their satisfaction is our highest priority. While my primary focus as a pharmacist is on the drug therapy of my patients, I spend more and more time addressing other concerns they may have regarding nutrition, daily living aids, financial burdens, access to services, mobility, and other areas of their day-to-day life. I have a firsthand understanding through healthcare experiences as a patient and pharmacist how these factors all play a role in determining an individual’s overall health and quality of life. It is my pleasure to help relieve some of the burden that exists when you are out of health by offering helpful advice, specialized products, and personalized care that can improve your situation.

My wife and I raised four children and several dogs at our home just a couple hundred yards from the front door of the pharmacy, and have been deeply rooted in the Macalester-Groveland neighborhood of St. Paul since we moved to the area in 1992. I volunteer with several different groups throughout St. Paul but my greatest volunteer commitment lies in helping create and maintain the Groveland Ice Rinks hockey and recreational skating facility, located just down the road on St. Clair Avenue, at Prior Ave. every winter since 2006. Having grown up on a dairy farm in central Minnesota, I learned early that some things worth doing require a significant amount of effort. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why St. Paul Corner Drug is still viable today after so many other independent pharmacies have disappeared over the past few decades. I have enjoyed my career as your community pharmacist and local small business owner and hope to continue in this role for years to come.

Hildie R. Hoeschen, RN, MSN, BA

NURSE, MAIL ORDER DIRECTOR & CREATIVE DIRECTOR

Hildie received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 2017 as a pre-medical student at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. After a gap year living in Spain, she decided to instead pursue a career in nursing and eventually earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Columbia University in New York City in 2021. She began formally working at the pharmacy as a Soda Jerk all the way back in 2009, but has since served a number of roles as a Clerk, Vaccinator, and Administrator of on- and off-site COVID vaccine clinics. She currently serves as St. Paul Corner Drug’s resident Nurse—a role in which she administers and bills vaccines, provides patient education, and performs healthcare coordination; Mail Order Director, wherein she independently manages the mail order needs of dozens of patients whose prescription(s) we’d otherwise lose money filling due to Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) abuse, and counsels others on how to fills certain medications at alternative pharmacies on their own; and Creative Director, handling the business’s website, social media, and making of other creative materials. She is also the creator of Mail Order UNCOVERED—a website specifically devoted to teaching the general public about mail order pharmacies and how to use them—and helps other independent pharmacies with website design.

A note from Hildie:

Growing up in this very pharmacy as one of the Hoeschen kids, I knew at a young age that I wanted to pursue a career in health. I loved watching my dad, John, and our staff help our patients feel welcome, safe, and supported in their health journey. And I loved the idea of someday being a person whose days would be devoted to helping others live and feel well.

My journey to becoming a Nurse—and I hope, one day, a Nurse Midwife—has been admittedly long and winding, marked by the challenges of civil unrest in our community, keeping our family’s small business alive in corporate America (and the American healthcare system), the COVID-19 pandemic, and facing long COVID and longstanding chronic health issues myself. Yet, I feel immensely grateful to have found myself working back at the pharmacy that has served as a second home for my entire life, where I have the pleasure of working alongside lovely humans as we strive to provide pharmacy the way it should be.

While I’m once again living in the Mac-Groveland neighborhood, I’ve been lucky to call Worcester and Boston, Massachusetts; Oxford, England; Logroño, Spain; and New York City, New York, “home” since first leaving Minnesota at the age of 18. In addition to traveling, in my free time I like to boulder, hike, run, play competitive sports, horseback ride, do yoga, read, cook, dabble in graphic design/blogging/photography, and go for walks. From time to time you may see me visiting the pharmacy with our family’s teacup maltepoo, Archie (we call him our resident “Pharm Dog.”).

Dr. Sharon R. Kahnke, RPh, PharmD

PHARMACIST & MEDICATION THERAPY MANAGEMENT (MTM) EXPERT

Sharon attended the College of Pharmacy at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and graduated with her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 1999. One of her main focuses in pharmacy is Medication Therapy Management (MTM), a service that provides patients with a thorough and thoughtful review of their complete medication regimen, including needed supplements, lifestyle modifications, and over-the-counter therapies.

A note from Sharon:

While in high school, I worked at the local independent pharmacy in my hometown of Storm Lake, Iowa. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the pharmacy culture. I could see how important it was to the community that they have someone in the healthcare field who was knowledgeable, accessible, and approachable. I wanted to be that for a community, so I chose to go to pharmacy school. I truly feel that it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I started at St. Paul Corner Drug in 2005 and have been gratefully inspired by my fellow coworkers ever since. It is incredibly rewarding to be able to interact with this community and use my profession to help others.

Robert J. Riegel, RPh, BSPharm

PHARMACIST

Robert is a 1987 graduate of Saint John’s University with a BS in Natural Science and a 1990 graduate of the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy with a BS in Pharmacy. Since graduation, he has been a practicing pharmacist in the Macalester-Groveland neighborhood of St. Paul, first at James Pharmacy (formerly located at the intersection of Snelling and Randolph Avenues) and then St. Paul Corner Drug since 1991.

A note from Robert:

I grew up in New Ulm, Minnesota, where my father was a Pharmacist. I continue to practice at St. Paul Corner Drug because, to me, it has the same small town feel and high-quality level of care that I came to know as a child. I truly feel a connection to the surrounding neighborhood and think this location is ideal for providing first class care that can improve patients’ medication therapy outcomes and overall wellness.

My wife and I reside in Woodbury where we raised our two now-grown boys. While they were around, many of my free hours were spent coaching basketball and leading Boy Scout events; now, the majority of my time outside work is spent volunteering and hanging outdoors. Some of my current interests include cycling, yard work, cross country skiing, and college football Saturdays.

Dr. Michelle Sandstrom, RPh, PharmD

PHARMACIST (also assists with MTM)

Michelle attended the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota and graduated with her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree in 1994. Since graduation, Michelle has worked in retail pharmacy, twenty years of which was spent in a small, independent pharmacy in Northfield, MN. She focused on quality patient care, where she spent time consulting with patients, performing diabetic education, assisted patients with MTM, compounded custom medications, and was an active investigator in Rx-to-OTC-switch drug studies. In 2021, Michelle was thrilled to join the team at St. Paul Corner Drug and has been excited to meet and assist the wonderful people that make up this community.

A note from Michelle:

I believe that active listening is a key component of successful health outcomes. I feel so fortunate to work with an owner and staff that put customer service first and allow me to take the time to listen to our patients and assist in improving drug and non-drug therapies for them.

I live with my husband in Cannon Falls where we raised four children, multiple horses, dogs, cats and an assortment of other critters. My hobbies include horseback and motorcycle riding, swimming, flower gardening, cooking, spending time with family and friends, and traveling. I also spend a significant amount of time with my grandchildren and volunteering at church and in the community.

Safety in our space

Read about how we’re making
our small but mighty pharmacy
a physically and socially safe space for our patients and patrons.

Sustainability

We believe the health of the planet directly impacts the health of the people living on it and that every person and business has a responsibility to protect this fundamental, symbiotic relationship between us and planet Earth. In order to minimize our environmental impact, we’ve taken intentional measures to limit the amount of waste we and our patients produce and power our pharmacy using clean energy.

Powered by the sun

Since February, 2012, approximately 65% of our store’s daily energy consumption has been supplied by our solar canopy—the first of its kind in our great state of Minnesota!

Biodegradable products & prescription packaging

While recycling is a great step toward minimizing our environmental impact, the fact remains that many items (most, actually) that are recycled fail to be downcycled into other items in the way we hope they would be. In place of recycling, utilizing biodegradable products helps us directly prevent devastating pollution in our landfills and oceans and allows these products to naturally return to the earth when they are no longer of use to us.

Since 2015, our now-retired old-fashioned soda fountain was a low-waste food service facility, with almost 100% compostable to-go packaging that included biodegradable cups, straws, and tableware. Our staff continues to compost all of our personal food waste.

Additionally, in 2018 switched to dispensing our patients’ medications in biodegradable prescription vials from Pharmacy-Lite that, after being deposited in the trash, will break down in 3 years (850% faster than conventional vials). Please note that, due to state regulations and to ensure the cleanliness of our workspace, we do NOT allow the reuse of patients’ prescription vials.
